Delightful fragrances at home – synthetic vs. natural

Delightful fragrances at home – synthetic vs. natural

Recently, it has become very popular to be surrounded by all sorts of synthetic fragrances. Flavors of sea, freshly cut grass, freshly baked cookies, berries – you can sense them in cars, homes, offices, shops, beauty salons, etc. But do you know how they affect you? Do not underestimate the fact that synthetic fragrances are one of the main reasons behind allergies.

Synthetic aromas reproduce scents of plants, but 95% of them are products of the petroleum industry. And as such, they are harmful and toxic to your health. In most cases, they are cheaper and more durable. Regardless that they resemble the aromas of real plants, unfortunately they do not have their impact.

One of the most popular ingredients in the synthetic air fresheners are phthalates and synthetic musks.

  • Phthalates are solvents that are added to the aromatic compositions because of their ability to easily evaporate at room temperature. Adding phthalates to the formula makes the freshener more aromatic because of the evaporation of the molecules. The scent has the opportunity to spread more easily in the air. Unfortunately, this also means that phthalates easily enter the lungs and body, where they can cause a number of health problems.

  • Synthetic musks are produced as substitutes for natural musks. Musks are an essential ingredient in aromatic compositions, since they enhance the flavouring properties of other substances in it. The musk ketone as well as xylene, however, is particularly dangerous for health.

Before you reach out for an air freshener at the supermarket, you should keep some things in mind:

  • Avoid synthetic fragrances;

  • Use pure essential oils, which will also have a beneficial effect on your health because of their aroma therapeutic properties.

  • It is impossible to produce essential oils from some fruit. These are strawberry, peach, apple, and pear. If the content on the packaging claims that in the composition of the flavor are included such oils, you should know for sure that these are synthetic fragrances.

  • When you choose natural aroma compositions, check the quality of the product. In many cases, producers replace the essential oils with synthetic oils.

  • Think global – what is beneficial to you is beneficial for others, so it is good for the environment, too.
